Food & Society at the Aspen Institute and Ardmore Institute of Health (AIH) announce a new strategic partnership, along with the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM), focused on the role of Food is Medicine in diabetes prevention and management.
“We’re thrilled to work with Ardmore Institute of Health and the American College of Lifestyle Medicine to deepen and broaden the impact that our organizations are making throughout the country,” said Corby Kummer, executive director of Food & Society at the Aspen Institute. “The convergence of the clinical and community care settings to support food is medicine, tailored and equitable care, as well as lifestyle medicine is ripe with opportunity. Our goal is to host collaborative environments where innovative ideas can flourish, ultimately leading to a Food is Medicine Best Practices Guide and improved health outcomes.”
Ron Stout, president and CEO of Ardmore Institute of Health, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Ardmore Institute of Health is delighted to support Food & Society at the Aspen Institute’s convening of thought leaders. Our shared goals for Food is Medicine initiatives are to promote equity, focus on prevention first and foremost, and help shape the future of Food is Medicine to meet the diverse needs of individuals and communities.”
It is well documented that there is an intersection between Food is Medicine patients and patients with Type 2 diabetes. The goal of the first convening is to document critical insights and best practices so that those working on diabetes can better understand and deploy Food is Medicine tools as part of a broader prevention and management strategy. The convenings will bring together diverse groups of participants, including representatives from community-based organizations, health care providers, and rural and indigenous health leaders, ensuring that a wide range of perspectives and experiences are included in the discussions.
This event is part of a series of workshops convened by Food & Society built off the fully updated Food is Medicine Research Action Plan, released in the spring of 2024. The Action Plan covers the full breadth of peer-reviewed food is medicine research, outlining its promise to address a broad swath of diet-related health conditions.
